Vols defensive coordinator Bob Shoop had some interesting quotes when talking with the media Wednesday leading up to the Battle at Bristol.
Shoop said he wasn’t able to use his `magic show’ against Appy State. What’s involved with the magic show? `I can’t tell you that’

Shoop is a gambling defensive play caller that errs on the side of blitzing. Tennessee struggled to disrupt the Appalachian State QB due to the quickness and deception of its offense.
Tennessee shut out App State in the second half of the 20-13 overtime Vols win but the Mountaineer offense did have key conversions to extend drives throughout the game.
Saturday in Bristol the Vols will face a different type of offense. Virginia Tech, under new coach Justin Fuente, runs a no-huddle offense. Shoop seems to think he has his guys ready to play to Virginia Tech’s tempo.
UT DC Bob Shoop on preparing for Va. Tech hurryup offense: `We’re going to be the fastest, no-huddle tempo defense in the world this week’ — Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) September 7, 2016
The Vols and Hokies kickoff at Bristol Motor Speedway at 8pm ET in the largest college football game ever. Look for a game preview later in the week on VFL Insider.
