The Vanderbilt Commodores have hired Ted Roof to be their new defensive coordinator, according to Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel.

Roof will replace Jason Tarver, who was fired last week after leading Vanderbilt’s defense to the No. 95 scoring defense in the nation. Tarver was the Commodores’ defensive coordinator for two seasons after coming to Nashville from the San Francisco 49ers (where he served as the 49ers’ linebackers coach, after serving as the Oakland Raiders’ defensive coordinator from 2012-14).

Vanderbilt’s new defensive coordinator, who was the head coach at Duke from 2004-07, spent the 2019 season working as Appalachian State’s defensive coordinator.

Under Roof, the Mountaineers had the No. 21 scoring defense in the nation

Prior to his time at Appalachian State, Roof had stints as a defensive coordinator at NC State, Georgia Tech and Penn State. He also served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator from 2009-2011 (which includes a national championship year in 2010).

Roof will be Derek Mason’s third defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt.
