The Tennessee Vols currently have 24 commits to their 2021 recruiting class, which means they don’t have much room for any additions, but they still have some big targets left on their board.
One of those players is five-star linebacker Smael Mondon, 6-foot-3/220 lbs from Dallas, GA (Paulding County).
Mondon is rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 player in the state of Georgia and the No. 1 outside linebacker in the nation. He’s also rated as the No. 8 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class.
The Vols are one of five teams strongly in the mix for Mondon (along with Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and LSU).
For now, Rivals recruiting analyst Mike Farrell believes Georgia has the edge for the elite linebacker, simply because he’s from Georgia and Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart has made Mondon a priority.
Rivals recruiting analyst Chad Simmons, however, admitted that “this one could still go a number of different ways”.
So where does Tennessee stand?
VolQuest’s Austin Price says Mondon is “very close” with Vols linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer (who has proved to be an elite recruiter). Price also mentioned that Mondon is the top linebacker on Tennessee’s board.
Based on what the recruiting analysts are saying, it sounds like Mondon isn’t close to a decision. That means this recruiting battle will likely go all the way to signing day.
If the Vols take a big step forward in 2020, I could easily see Mondon landing in Knoxville.
But I could also see Mondon electing to stay in-state and head to Athens.
It’s far too early to predict where the talented linebacker will end up.
