2019 Tennessee Vols signee Elijah Simmons has yet to play a down of college football, but he’s already a legend on Rocky Top.
Simmons, 6-foot/350 lbs, looks like a player who is arriving to UT a few decades too late. He first turned heads with his throwback look when he committed to the Vols last summer.
The three-star defensive lineman from Nashville garnered a lot of attention during the NFL draft when JJ Watt ended up tweeting about the future Vol.
Simmons was on the draft stage for one of the Titans’ selections and Watt immediately noticed how Simmons stood out among the other high school players.
It’s not just Simmons’ imposing size that has folks noticing him, either.
Simmons is also incredibly athletic for his size. He showed off his athleticism when he filmed himself dunking just after the early signing period. Simmons received some grief for his “dunk”, which was more of a tip in.

On Wednesday, Simmons tweeted a video of a legitimate dunk. It’s certainly impressive for someone his size.

I’m not sure I ever remember a three-star signee receiving as much attention/hype as Simmons has during the last ten months.
Simmons, who also won a state title in shot put and discus, wasn’t a highly recruited player out of high school (his only other SEC offer was from Missouri), but the Vols feel they got a real steal by signing him.
If Simmons lives up to the legend status that he’s created for himself, it’ll make Jeremy Pruitt and his staff look like a genius for signing the previously unknown Tennessee native.
