Tennessee Vols quarterback Jarrett Guarantano is one of the top signal callers in college football.

At least according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF recently ranked all 130 FBS quarterbacks and Guarantano came in at No. 21 on their list.

Here’s what they had to say about JG:

During the 2018 season, Guarantano’s performance against Kentucky was the highest-graded single-game outing among returning quarterbacks. He showcased what made him such a highly-touted recruit as the No. 1 dual-threat QB from New Jersey and the No. 2 player overall from his state. His marked improvement from 2017 to 2018 gives reason for hope of a big season in Knoxville this year.

I’m a bit surprised to see Guarantano ranked this high. Not because he doesn’t have the ability, but because he hasn’t performed like the No. 21 quarterback in the nation thus far during his career on Rocky Top.

Of course, that’s not all Guarantano’s fault. Tennessee’s offensive line play the past several years has been putrid. And nothing hampers a quarterback’s ability to be effective more than an inadequate offensive line.

New Beginnings

The hope for the Vols in 2019 is that Guarantano will take off under new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

Former Vols quarterback Jonathan Crompton performed drastically better under Chaney in 2009 after a lackluster first three season in Knoxville. I wouldn’t be shocked if Guarantano shows a similar improvement this season.

Chaney’s influence, plus improved offensive line play (UT hopes, at least), will give Guarantano a chance to live up to his full potential in 2019.

And that’s obviously great news for Tennessee.

If Guarantano performs like the No. 21 quarterback in the nation, the Volunteers will absolutely win seven or eight games.

I’m pretty sure nearly every UT fan in the country would sign up right now for that win/loss record.
