The Tennessee Vols are still searching for their next offensive coordinator, while also trying to lock down some elite 2019 talent before the early signing period in mid-December.
Here’s what things currently stand, via various reports, in Tennessee’s search for a new play caller.
Huge Freeze — Former Ole Miss Head coach
When the Vols first started their search for a new offensive coordinator, it was reported (by Bruce Feldman, who is a very reliable college football reporter) that Freeze wouldn’t be “in the mix” to replace Tyson Helton. Well that has changed. According to VolQuest, Jeremy Pruitt recently met with Freeze in Memphis to talk about the coaching position.
It’s still unclear if Freeze is Pruitt’s top choice. But it does appear that Freeze is very interested in coming to Tennessee. If the Vols want to hire Freeze, who is as close to a home run hire as Pruitt can make, they better act fast. There’s a good chance that Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley takes a head coaching job somewhere (likely Maryland). If that’s the case, Alabama could be interested in hiring Freeze.
Chip Lindsey — Auburn offensive coordinator
Until yesterday, I thought Lindsey was the leader in the clubhouse to replace Helton. And I still think he’s right at the top. But the interest from Freeze certainly seems like it knocks Lindsey down the list a bit. However, it’s all about what Pruitt is comfortable with. We know he has a relationship with Lindsey from their time at Hoover High School. But how would he feel about hiring an offensive coordinator that struggled a bit this past year in the SEC?
Dan Enos — Alabama QBs coach
Enos is still squarely in the mix for this job, but the way it’s going to play out makes me think the path for him to come to Tennessee isn’t very clear. If Locksley moves on from Alabama, which looks likely, then Enos could become Nick Saban’s new offensive coordinator (Saban loves to promote from within). There’s still the possibility that Tennessee passes on Freeze and Alabama hires the former Ole Miss head coach. The Vols would then, seemingly, have to also pass on Lindsey to hire Enos.
Eli Drinkwitz — NC State offensive coordinator
Drinkwitz was mentioned as candidate recently by Football Scoop, but I think this was just Pruitt doing his due diligence. I don’t think Drinkwitz is a serious candidate to replace Helton. This is shaping up as a three finalists type deal and Drinkwitz doesn’t appear to be one of those three.
