At one point during the Tennessee Vols’ near-disastrous coaching search, it looked like former UT quarterback Tee Martin was going to get a shot to lead his former team.

Martin, the offensive coordinator at USC, never received an interview from Tennessee.

When Jeremy Pruitt was hired to replace Butch Jones, there was some early speculation that Tee Martin might be hired as the offensive coordinator.

Pruitt did indeed hire a USC assistant to be his offensive coordinator, but it wasn’t Martin.

Tyson Helton, who was the quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator (and shared play calling duties with Martin) at USC, was hired to lead the Vols’ offense.

Martin, who had definite interest in the head coaching job at UT, had his sights set higher than returning to Tennessee in a lateral move. Plus, Helton was likely Pruitt’s first choice anyway (Pruitt has known Helton for a long time).

Obviously there’s potential for a lot of awkwardness between Helton and Martin. But if there is any, you wouldn’t be able to tell it. Helton said Martin recently texted him to tell him he’s pulling for him at UT.

Judging by this exchange, there’s no tension between the two former colleagues.

And that’s a great thing.

Tee Martin helped bring a championship to Knoxville. It would be a shame to see the relationship between Tennessee and Martin deteriorate.

Fortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case at all.
