National Signing Day isn’t expected to be very eventful for the Tennessee Vols, due to an early signing period that saw UT sign 19 recruits.

But there is a possibility that Tennessee could flip a highly rated five-star wide receiver.

George Pickens, a 6’4″/190 lb wide receiver who is rated as the top 2019 player in the state of Alabama, is currently committed to Auburn.

Tennessee, however, is making a strong push for the elite playmaker. The Vols are receiving Pickens’ final visit before National Signing Day next week.

While a flip to UT isn’t imminent, it’s certainly a possibility. Pickens has kept his recruitment close to the vest, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what happens on February 6.

Flipping Pickens would be huge for the Vols for a couple of different reasons.

The most obvious reason is that Pickens is a game changing wide receiver who would help Tennessee restore their reputation as “Wide Receiver U”.

Pickens is a big, physical receiver who can routinely win 50/50 deep balls. He also has great field awareness (almost Cordarelle Patterson like in the open field).

The other reason that landing Pickens would be huge for Tennessee has to do with recruiting.

Landing the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama isn’t something that Tennessee is typically able to do (not many schools outside of Alabama or Auburn do).

If Tennessee is able to sign the top player in the state of Alabama, it could have a giant ripple effect in recruiting for the Vols. Suddenly, other top recruits will sit up and maybe pay UT a bit more attention than they previously were.

Sometimes all it takes is one domino to fall for a program to experience a windfall in recruiting.

Pickens could be that domino for Tennessee.

The good news for the Vols this weekend is that the only other expected official visitor to Tennessee is Darnell Wright (who has all but committed to UT). That means Pickens will receive a LOT of attention from the coaching staff.

Getting Pickens’ final visit is key for the Vols. While it doesn’t guarantee they’ll be able to fend off Auburn and Georgia, it at least gives Jeremy Pruitt and his staff a fighting chance to land the extremely talented wide receiver.
