Tennessee Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt isn’t about to reveal this early who his starting quarterback will be on September 1 against West Virginia.

But that doesn’t mean the peppering of quarterback related questions from the media is going to cease anytime soon, either.

After Tennessee’s scrimmage on Sunday, Pruitt was asked if any of the Vols’ quarterbacks have separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

Pruitt said no separation has occurred. It’s worth noting, however, that Pruitt first mentioned Keller Chryst and Jarrett Guarantano, before catching himself and bringing up Will McBride and J.T. Shrout.

Surprisingly, Pruitt singled out Shrout, a true freshman, as the player that likely has the best arm on the team.

(It’s only surprising because Pruitt rarely singles out players for any reason. Shrout was known to have a cannon coming out of high school.)

It’s abundantly obvious to anyone following this quarterback race that it’s a two-man race (Chryst and Guarantano), despite what Pruitt and offensive coordinator Tyson Helton have said publicly in recent weeks.

And it’s also clear that Pruitt wants to suppress any talk of this being Guarantano’s job to lose, which has been reported in recent weeks.

But at the same time, Pruitt admitted that he has a “good idea” at the quarterback position.

All signs still point to this being Guarantano’s job.

By the way, Pruitt mentioned that the offense was able to create some explosive plays during the scrimmage on Sunday (though they also turned the ball over a few times when putting the ball in the air).

Pruitt is never going to be a coach who overly praises his team in front of the media after a practice. But there were a few moments on Sunday where you could see some optimism coming from the first time head coach.

That’s probably the most positivity we’ve seen from Pruitt since his arrival in Knoxville.

Pruitt doesn’t give us much, but reading between the lines, it sounds like things are moving in the right direction for Tennessee football this fall.
