The Tennessee Vols received a visit this past weekend from 2020 four-star athlete/cornerback Joel Williams.

Williams, 6-foot-1/179 lbs from Baton Rouge, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 7 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 13 athlete in the nation.
The Louisiana native also attended Tennessee’s junior day exactly a year ago (according to 247Sports) and was offered the same day. It was Williams’ first reported offer from a SEC program.
Since the initial offer from the Vols, Williams has received offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M, among many others.
It seems unlikely that Williams, who is being recruited to Tennessee by New Orleans native David Johnson (UT’s running backs coach), will end up in Knoxville. I mostly think that because it’s typically incredibly hard to steal elite players from the Baton Rouge area (they almost always seem to be a LSU lock).
But the fact that Tennessee has a Louisiana native recruiting Williams, combined with their position as the first SEC program to offer him, gives the Vols at least a fighting chance here.
Recruiting is always wild, so it will be interesting to see if UT becomes a major player for Williams over the next several months.
