2021 five-star linebacker Smael Mondon, 6-foot-3/220 lbs from Dallas, GA, is one of the top recruits in the nation and the Tennessee Vols are one of the programs in the mix to land him.
The Vols, along with Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and LSU, are in the final group of teams that Mondon is focusing on as the end of his recruitment nears.
Georgia has been viewed by some as the favorite for Mondon, but that’s more of a “feeling” thing for recruiting analysts (Mondon has been notoriously tight-lipped during the recruiting process).
Mondon recently discussed his ongoing recruitment with Rivals and 247Sports. And while Mondon didn’t give too much away, he made a comment that made me a bit more positive about Tennessee’s chances.
“I am not too big into facilities, wins and losses or things like that, but it is more about the coaches and the people at the program that make these five stand out”, said Mondon to Rivals.
That comment is extremely good news for the Vols.
The only thing that separates Tennessee right now from those other programs is wins and losses. Otherwise, the Vols have everything a recruit could want (and the wins are on an upward trajectory anyway).
If Mondon’s decision comes down to the people within the program, then Tennessee’s chances of landing the elite linebacker are just as good as the chances of Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and LSU (especially since Tennessee’s ace recruiter, Brian Niedermeyer, is Mondon’s lead recruiter).
Mondon is a bit of a wild card. No one knows what he’s going to do or when he’s going to do it.
I wouldn’t be shocked with any decision he makes. The uncertainty around Mondon’s recruitment, combined with his recent comments, is why I think Tennessee is firmly in the mix to land one of the best 2021 recruits in the nation.
