Earlier this week, the Tennessee Vols became the first program to offer the cousin of one of the NFL’s best athletes.

TJ Metcalf, 6-foot-1/180 lbs from Birmingham, AL (Spain Park), tweeted on Wednesday that he received an offer from the Volunteers.

Metcalf’s cousin is Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, a former Ole Miss standout who was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

DK Metcalf, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 229 lbs, famously ran a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft. He was named to his first Pro-Bowl after the 2020 season.

TJ Metcalf, who is listed as a safety in the 2023 recruiting class, hasn’t been rated yet by 247Sports.

It’s obviously still early in Metcalf’s recruitment, but it’s still a bit surprising that he hasn’t received any other offers. Tennessee was smart to go ahead and offer the young athlete, considering he comes from a rich bloodline of athletes (his uncle, DK’s father, played for eight seasons in the NFL).

However, if Ole Miss decides to jump in this race, it could be tough to beat out the Rebels for Metcalf. The family connection to Ole Miss could be too much for the Vols (or any other program) to overcome.
