Tennessee Vols wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Tee Martin wasn’t shy about dishing out some high praise for senior wide receiver Marquez Callaway on Thursday.
Martin told reporters that he believes Callaway is one of the best wide receivers in the SEC. He also believes Callaway could be an “early NFL draft pick”, while comparing him to former USC wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (who currently plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was coached by Martin while with the Trojans).
It was also mentioned by Martin that Callaway ran a “4.4 flat” this summer.
Tee Martin said Marquez Callaway reminds him of former USC star JuJu Smith-Schuster.
“He ran a 4.4 flat this summer. He’s one of the best WRs in the SEC, and I’m not just saying that because he’s at Tennessee. He can be an early NFL draft pick.”

Callaway is 6-foot-2. If he runs a flat 4.4, that puts in him the “potentially elite” category — especially with his unique ability to win 50/50 ball situations.
The Georgia native caught 37 passes for 592 yards and two touchdowns as a junior last year. Those are modest numbers at best.
But I think Callaway will see a huge uptick in usage in 2019. New offensive coordinator Jim Chaney is a big fan of taking shots down the field, which will make Callaway especially valuable.
Callaway hasn’t reached his potential at Tennessee because of coaching changes/transition. But he’s poised to have a massive breakout season in 2019.
