The Tennessee Vols are one of the teams to beat for an under-the-radar three-star cornerback from North Carolina.

Brandon Johnson, 5-foot-10/170 lbs from Newton, NC, tweeted his top six schools over the weekend and he included Tennessee.

Johnson is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 60 player in the state of North Carolina and the No. 99 overall cornerback in the nation.

This isn’t the type of cornerback that we’re accustomed to seeing Jeremy Pruitt and his staff target.

Pruitt typically likes long, rangy cornerbacks. And with his reputation as a great secondary coach, Pruitt usually has a stable of four-star defensive backs lined up (especially now that Tennessee is recruiting at a higher level).

But it’s obvious that Pruitt and defensive coordinator/secondary coach Derrick Ansley see something they like in Johnson.

I mentioned last week that Pruitt and his staff prefer to trust their own evaluations. This is just another example of that thought process in action.
