The Tennessee Titans seem committed to bringing running back Derrick Henry back to Nashville in 2020, via either the franchise tag or an extension.
They seem less committed, however, to bringing Ryan Tannehill back next season.
ESPN’s Matthew Berry reported on Tuesday that a Titans insider he spoke with the at the combine expects Tannehill to hit the open market.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that Tannehill absolutely won’t be back in Nashville in 2020. But it would certainly make bringing Tannehill back difficult.
It would obviously be easier to negotiate with Tannehill right now when no other teams are involved. The price for Tannehill will only go up once he hits free agency.
Now, if the Titans are able to work out a longterm deal with Henry, then they could use the franchise tag on Tannehill.
But with all the Tom Brady rumors swirling around, it’s possible that Tennessee simply wants to explore their options once free agency begins.
It’s going to get wild in the NFL over the next couple of weeks. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, because right now we have no idea where it’s going.
