1. No distractions
When the Titans first reported to Training Camp on Wednesday, the biggest storylines surrounding the team involved linebacker Kevin Dodd and tackle Taylor Lewan. Those storylines were on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
Lewan was reportedly in the heat of major contract negotiations. With his rookie contract expiring at the end of the 2018 season, it was becoming increasingly clear at the beginning of the week that the Titans wanted to do everything in their power to get a longterm deal done.
That they did. Lewan was signed to a major contract extension on Friday morning that makes him the highest paid offensive lineman in the history of the NFL.
Dodd was in the news not because he’s a generational talent, but because he was a giant flop. After just two years, the former #33 overall pick had clearly begun to fall out of favor with the Titans organization. The last straw came when he neglected to report to camp. He was promptly cut.
Both of these decisions, to extend Lewan and cut Dodd, showed that general manager Jon Robinson does not want to put up with distractions. Every time Lewan faced the media, he was asked about his contract. Every time Mike Vrabel faced the media, he was asked about Dodd.
With both of those situations now in the rear-view mirror, the Titans can spend more time actually focusing on football.
