CBS Sports recently ranked the starting quarterbacks in the NFL by tiers, which will undoubtedly cause some debate among fans.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota is listed in tier three, along with Jimmy Garropolo, Dak Prescott, Jameis Winston, Andrew Luck, Deshaun Watson, Derek Carr and Jared Goff.
While I don’t think the tiers from CBS are necessarily “perfect”, I think they’re fair.
(I also applaud CBS for placing Andrew Luck in the third tier and not putting him higher simply due to his “potential for greatness”.)
Mariota has the ability to be a tier two, or maybe even a tier one quarterback, at some point in his career. But he hasn’t reached that point yet.
(CBS noted that Mariota is the only quarterback in tier three that has a playoff win, but that’s incorrect as Luck has won a playoff game.)
I think this is the last year, however, that Mariota is listed among the quarterbacks in tier three.
During the first three years of his NFL career, Mariota has had to deal with a litany of coaches in his ear. The hope is that Mike Vrabel and new offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur will provide some stability for the Titans’ offense.
Mariota should also be put in a much better position to succeed in LaFleur’s offense (just look at Jared Goff with the Los Angeles Rams last season).
For what it’s worth, I have a feeling Mariota is just fine with flying under the radar.
But if he has a big year in 2018, he won’t be able to fly quite as low anymore.
Which will be more than ok with Titans fans.
