Former Tennessee Vols linebacker Chris Weatherd gave UT fans an inside look at the Butch Jones era during an in-depth interview this week with Fox Sports Knoxville.
Weatherd went into detail about the discord between coaches, the “tense” atmosphere on Rocky Top, the Jonathan Kongbo “hanging up the cleats” tweet, and the Shy Tuttle “fell on a helmet” incident.
It was an incredibly fascinating interview that painted the clearest picture yet of what went down during Butch’s time at Tennessee.

It was certainly odd to hear Weatherd go on the record about the tumultuous Jones era — especially in such stunning detail. While it’s not uncommon to hear a story here or there about particular coaches, we don’t usually see former players disparage their college coaches — no matter how toxic the situation was.
(It’s worth noting, also, that Weatherd’s former teammates didn’t dispute the things he said during the interview.)
Weatherd is a former four-star recruit who transferred to Tennessee from Trinity Valley CC. The Texas native played two seasons for the Vols (2014-2015), which means he wasn’t directly invovled in the Kongbo/Tuttle situations.
