The Tennessee Vols could be adding a dangerous offensive weapon to their roster in 2021.
LSU tight end Arik Gilbert, a former five-star recruit who was rated as the No. 5 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class (247Sports composite), officially entered the transfer portal this week.
Gilbert was reportedly “homesick” at LSU which is the reason he opted out of the 2020 season with two games remaining. He’s from Georgia so it would make sense that he’d end up in Athens in 2021.
But that might not be the case according to a pair of Rivals recruiting analysts.
Adam Gorney and Mike Farrell, who cover recruiting for Rivals, both expect Gilbert to end up at Tennessee.
“I know it seems like it would make sense with Georgia’s shot at the playoff next season and talk of the former five-star being homesick, but I still expect him to end up at Tennessee to play with his high school quarterback Harrison Bailey,” wrote Farrell.
Gorney agrees, saying “I wouldn’t count out Florida or Alabama for him, but Tennessee makes a lot of sense as well”.
Gilbert and Bailey, who is expected to be the Vols’ starting quarterback in 2021, were quite the duo at Marietta High School.
It would be a dream for the Vols to see the two reunited in Knoxville. Gilbert is a freak athlete who is an instant mismatch as soon as he steps onto the field.
I’m sure there will be a lot of “courting” of Gilbert over the next few weeks/months, but it sounds like Tennessee is firmly in the mix to land the stud tight end.
