The Nashville Predators announced today that Pekka Rinne has been placed on injured reserve.

This comes a day after Rinne left a game early due to injury. Kevin Fiala collided with Rinne after a Calgary Flames goal and Rinne left the game a few minutes later.

Here’s Thomas Willis with the breaking news from the Preds:

By rule, Pekka Rinne must miss at least the next three games for the Preds. This will put Juuse Saros in a very important role for the next few games. The Preds also announced they called up Miroslav Svoboda to backup Saros for the time being.

Also, the Predators have not updated what kind of injury this is. It could be a concussion, it could be a lower body injury, it could be anything.

Here’s what Filip Forsberg had to say about the situation:

“On the one hand, we just lost the best goalie in the League. On the other, we know Juuse is ready for this opportunity, he’s one of the League’s best as well… He would definitely be a starter if he wasn’t behind the Vezina Trophy winner.”

This could just be precautionary. With the team playing well and with Rinne’s injury history, you can never be too careful. The good news is that Saros has been playing well and the Preds feel very confident that he can step into the starting role and win games.

However if the Nashville Predators are going to continue to dominate games this season, they will need Pekka Rinne to return from injury as quickly as possible.
