One of the most intriguing things happening right now on Rocky Top is the situation between Kevin Steele and the Tennessee Vols.

Steele was hired as a “defensive assistant” by previous head coach Jeremy Pruitt, just before Pruitt was fired by Tennessee for cause. Steele then served as the Vols’ interim head coach until Josh Heupel was hired to replace Pruitt.

As of Sunday, Steele is still on staff at Tennessee. He’s the only holdover from Pruitt.

Steele is owed $900,000 whether or not he’s retained by Heupel. And at this point, it doesn’t appear that Steele will be part of Heupel’s inaugural staff at Tennessee.

Despite this strange situation, Steele is still actively recruiting for the Vols.

2022 three-star wide receiver Kenzy Paul, a Quebec native who lives in Chattanooga, recently spoke to VolQuest about his recruitment.

Paul noted that he’s had several quality conversations with Heupel and Steele.

“I talked to him (Heupel) and Coach Steele both over the last week,” said Paul. “It was really just to get to know me a little more. They were both very easy to talk to. I feel like I’m more important to this staff than the other one.”

Steele is still under contract and he’s doing the job he was hired to do. How much longer he’ll be doing that job is a question that still has no clear answer.

As far as Tennessee’s vacant defensive coordinator position?

Football Scoop’s John Brice reported on Sunday afternoon that Ohio State linebackers coach Al Washington has become a factor in the Vols’ search.

Washington, who played college football at Boston College, has never been a defensive coordinator, so he’d be a bit of a gamble for Heupel. The Ohio State assistant has also spent time working at Michigan and Cincinnati, as well as his alma mater.
