The 2020 college football season is less than three months away, which means it’s time for pre-season rankings to start filtering out.
On Tuesday, 247Sports released their pre-season top 25 (compiled by their national analysts) and it looks like you can go ahead and secure your spot on the Tennessee Vols’ hype train.
That’s because 247Sports has Tennessee at No. 22.
I actually think this is pretty fair. The Vols played like a top 25 team to close the 2019 season (they have an active six-game winning streak). So why wouldn’t they be ranked in the top 25 heading into the 2020 season?
Tennessee is set to have one of the best offensive lines in the SEC. They have an experienced quarterback and they have a well-coached defense led by Jeremy Pruitt and Derek Ansley. All the ingredients are there for a top 25 caliber season.
247Sports left some room for error in their evaluation of the Vols, though.
“There’s a decent chance Tennessee is the team we overhype greatly thanks to a late-season push,” wrote 247Sports’ Chris Hummer.
This isn’t the first time the Vols have received some hype heading into a season. Tennessee fans know the drill by now. But just because UT hasn’t delivered on the hype before, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be included in the top 25 in 2020.
It’s a new era on Rocky Top with Pruitt at the helm. What happened under Butch Jones and Derek Dooley isn’t relevant to the current team.
Which is why it’s nice to see 247Sports being objective with their ranking.
