Former Tennessee Vols signal caller Tee Martin knows a thing or two about quarterbacks.
He did, after all, win a national championship as the Vols’ starting quarterback.
But even with those credentials, Martin’s recent comments about former USC Trojans quarterback Sam Darnold (Martin was Darnold’s offensive coordinator at USC) might be a bit of a reach.
In a recent interview with SNY, Martin compared Darnold to Tennessee/NFL legend Peyton Manning.
Martin said Manning had a knack for making plays and getting the offense going when a game entered a “lull”. Darnold, according to Martin, possesses that same quality.

Look, there’s no doubt Darnold put up some impressive numbers during his two years as a starter at USC. And I think he could have a great career in the NFL with the New York Jets.
But comparing him to Manning in any regard? Not only is that a bit crazy, it’s unfair to Darnold.
The former Trojan quarterback is already going to have sky high expectations simply because he plays in the bright lights of New York.
Putting his name in the same sentence as Manning’s, before he’s ever thrown a pass in the NFL, probably won’t help temper expectations.
Darnold doesn’t turn 21 until June 5. Hopefully he’s able to deal with the ups and downs that come with being a young quarterback in the NFL.
