Former Tennessee Vols defensive back Eric Berry didn’t play in the NFL this past season after getting released by the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2018 season.

But that was apparently by design. Berry took a year off to get healthy and plans to return to the NFL in 2020.

Berry, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014 and suffered a torn achilles in 2017, has only played in three games since 2016.

The five-time Pro-Bowler just turned 31 in December. If healthy, he has plenty of years ahead of him in the NFL. When Berry is right, he’s among the top safeties in the NFL. Unfortunately, he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy lately.

Maybe the year off, without the stress of football practices/games, allowed Berry to get back to 100 percent.

I’m sure Berry will have plenty of suitors. His high ceiling, for what will likely be a reasonable price, will certainly have some teams willing to take a chance on him.
