The Tennessee Vols haven’t beat Alabama since the 2006 season, but that didn’t stop UT athletic director Phillip Fulmer from talking a little smack to a Crimson Tide fan recently.
On Sunday, at the Volunteers of America’s annual Dinner of Champions, Fulmer was teased by an Alabama fan with a rallying cry of “Roll Tide”.
Fulmer’s response, via the Knoxville News Sentinel, was absolutely perfect.
The legendary former Tennessee head coach replied with “Well, I can’t help but say, 11-5”, which was Fulmer’s career record against the Tide.
That will shut up almost any Bama fan — rather quickly, too.
Fulmer, however, is about the only person on Rocky Top these days that can talk junk to Bama fans.
The Vols are 0-11 against the Tide during the Nick Saban era, which started in 2007. Fulmer is responsible for Tennessee’s last win against Alabama — a 16-13 win in Knoxville during the 2006 season.
Not only have the Vols failed to beat Bama in their last 11 tries, they’ve only kept the game close in two of those meetings (a 12-10 loss in 2009 and a 19-14 loss in 2015).
Tennessee is hoping that Jeremy Pruitt, one of Saban’s proteges, can help the Volunteers finally break through against the Tide.
But that won’t be a guaranteed recipe for success. Saban is 12-0 against his former assistants.
Perhaps Pruitt will be the coach that flips the script.
Either way, Fulmer will forever be able to boast about his record against Alabama.
And it seems he has no problem doing just that whenever the situation calls for it.
