Derek Mason

Derek Mason has had his best year as head coach. Finishing the year 6-6, the Commodores are going bowling. After Conference Championship Saturday, Vandy will know what bowl they will be in on Sunday.

This season’s success has started the contract conversation…

Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg:

Vanderbilt and coach Derek Mason have started discussions about a revised contract that would include a raise and more years, ESPN has learned. The Commodores won four of their final six games, closing with wins over Ole Miss and Tennessee, to finish 6-6 and ensure their first bowl game under Mason, who has improved his record in each of the past two seasons.

It’s just one win, but that Tennessee victory was massive for Derek Mason and the Vanderbilt football program.

  1. This is way too soon and a knee-jerk reaction to the euphoria that a win over Tennessee gives Commodore Nation. Mason’s first season was a dumpster fire. The second year showed promise on defense. This year Vandy beat UGA, Ole Miss, and UT while also performing horribly against SC, UK, GaTech and Mizzou, escaping against WKU, and laying down at UF.

How did Vandy look statistically this year? [SPOILER ALERT: Not good – no better than 60th on defense in either pass, run, or total defense… supposedly Mason’s expertise.]

Give him a 4th year to prove himself, sure, but a raise and/or extension? He hasn’t earned it unless David Williams is content with mediocrity.
