Heading into the national championship game against Virginia Tech on Sunday night, Gus Duggerton had a lifetime contract to coach the Tennessee Vols on the table.

Tennessee, however, pulled the deal after the Vols’ poor showing in the championship game against the Hokies.

Coach Duggs has a decision to make. Does he stay at Tennessee for another year? Or does he leave Knoxville behind and look for a new (easier) challenge?

And do the Vols even want him back?

I think there’s a clear reason why UT should want Coach Duggs back. And I think there’s a clear reason why Coach Duggs should want to stay at Tennessee.

First off, despite the tough loss to Virginia Tech, Duggerton did an incredible job with the Vols in 2017. Taking a team that was 4-8 the previous season to the national championship game is nothing short of incredible. I’m not sure there’s another coach in the nation that could’ve accomplished what Coach Duggs accomplished in his first year as Tennessee’s head coach (not even Nick Saban turned Alabama around that fast).

It’s not Duggerton’s fault that quarterback Caleb Pressley threw six interceptions in the title game. Who can win a game with that many turnovers?!?!

Now, the reason that Duggs should want to stay?

There’s not another program in the country that offers that type of exposure that Tennessee offers. The Vols offer Duggs (and Barstool Big Cat) the opportunity for the most social media engagement.

(Over 100,000 people at any given time were watching the Twitch stream of the championship game on Sunday night.)

When it comes to social media hype, Tennessee is the peak. Any program from here will be a letdown for Duggs.

And anyway, who wants to leave short of accomplishing the main goal? The Vols are one of the favorites to win the 2018 national championship. Tighten up the defense and UT could cruise to a title.

Leaving Rocky Top would be a mistake for all parties involved.

Coach Duggs sticking around for year two is the only decision that makes sense.
