Pre-season hype.

There’s nothing like it — especially when it comes to college football.

Every year around this time, we start getting plenty of pre-season predictions. Sometimes those predictions snowball into a massive hype train that can’t be stopped, until, that is, the season gets underway and expectations aren’t met (the Tennessee Vols in 2016 for example).

CBS Sports recently revisited pre-season predictions for the past six seasons and compared them to how the seasons actually panned out.

According to their formula, the Volunteers are the most overhyped team of the past six seasons, coming in just above Arkansas and LSU.

Here’s what CBS had to say about Tennessee:

The Volunteers rarely lived up to expectations under former coach Butch Jones, which is probably why he’s interning for Alabama coach Nick Saban rather than working for Tennessee athletic director Phillip Fulmer in 2018. The Volunteers have only exceeded their expectation once since expansion — the 2014 season when they finished fourth in the SEC East. Every other year, they have either met the expectation or fallen short — punctuated by 2017, when they were expected to finish third but wound up in the cellar of the SEC East.

This is pretty bad for the Vols, because outside of 2016, expectations haven’t typically been that high.

No one expected Tennessee to do much in 2012 or 2013, and they didn’t. There were also quite a few folks that expected a big letdown in 2017, thanks to the departure of star players like Josh Dobbs, Derek Barnett and Alvin Kamara (though no one saw a 4-8 season coming).

Expectations will likely be light for new head coach Jeremy Pruitt in 2018, but it won’t be long until fans/media analysts are predicting the Vols to be a major factor in the SEC East division race.

Pruitt has a low bar to clear in terms of recent past coaches, but the expectations at Tennessee are still high.

If Pruitt want to quickly win fans over, he’ll need to blow past low expectations in 2018.
