2020 four-star defensive back Joel Williams, one of the Tennessee Vols’ top recruiting targets, tweeted on Friday that he plans to announce his commitment on September 9.

Williams, a 6-foot-1/180 lb cornerback who was previously committed to the Florida Gators, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 11 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 25 athlete in the nation.

The Baton Rouge native told Rivals earlier this month that his main goal is getting to the NFL.

Williams added, however, that Tennessee is “always in the mix”, noting that he loves the “whole staff and the program”.

If getting to the NFL is Williams’ main goal, then it’ll be tough for the Vols to beat out Alabama for his commitment. But it won’t be impossible.

Jeremy Pruitt has put a lot of defensive backs in the NFL. And defensive coordinator/secondary coach Derrick Ansley just spent a season coaching in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

Suffice it to say, Pruitt and Ansley know what it takes to get players to the league.

And if Williams wants early playing time, Tennessee might be his best option. The Vols have some solid young talent in their secondary, but their depth is still suspect at best.

Tennessee currently has 11 players committed to their 2020 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 28 in the nation.
