Vanderbilt sticking to its stance: Ralph Webb is the best RB in the SEC

The numbers might back it up. Ralph Webb is the “best” running back in the SEC this season.

That’s a strong statement from the Vandy Football representatives at SEC Media Days on Tuesday. Head Coach Derek Mason, quarterback Kyle Shurmur, linebacker Oren Burks and Webb, himself, didn’t back off their stance.

“He wants to be the best,” Mason said of Webb. “He came back this (senior) year to give himself a chance to do something. He’s back and Vanderbilt history’s done. He’s chasing SEC history. He wants to be a top five running back in this conference. And for him, he’s got his own set of goals.”

Already the Commodores’ all-time leading rusher, Webb is only 653 yards away from 4,000 career rushing yards. He needs 1,249 yards to pass Darren McFadden as the SEC’s second leading rusher of all-time, behind Herschel Walker. Webb rushed for 1,283 yards last season in 13 games. It’s doable.

So, is it that¬†crazy to mention Ralph Webb as one of the best running backs in the entire country? It depends on what your definition of “best” is. He is in Vanderbilt’s mind. And, according to Burks, he fits right in with most of Vanderbilt’s top talent: unnoticed, unrecognized, under the radar.

Ralph Webb thinks he’s the best college running back in America. No longer is he worried about getting overlooked by his hometown team, the Florida Gators. He’s not worried who the second best back in the country is either. He said so below in the video.
